Formation of the Old Testament. — From the long period of time covered by its various books, it is evident that the Old Testament is a growth. At first there existed only the law of Moses. In successive periods, as men were moved to write or the events of Hebrew history made it necessary, new books were added to the sacred collec- tion. In some cases, as Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and a few others, the name of the author and the date o...f writing are given ; but unfortunately, in most instances, these de- tails have been omitted. This fact has given rise to differ- ences of opinion as to the age of certain books ; but all biblical students recognize a gradual development of the Old Testament collection of writings. But two or three centuries before Christ the Old Testament had assumed substantially its present form, as is shown by the Greek translation, called the Septtiagint, which was made at that time.
