No relation can be established with only one object, and without relations there is no thought. Of course the question vanishes if time itself, instead of being an independent duration in which thought occurs, is really only the form of our experience. The claim that consciousness depends on the antithesis of subject and object has been variously misunderstood. In particular, it has been taken to mean that the subject and object are ontologically distinct. Hence it has been argued that idealism... is certainly false, as that doctrine denies the object. Hamilton especially argued that con- sciousness embraces both subject and object, and hence that both are given as equally real. But this claim con- founds a mental function with an ontological distinction. The object of consciousness is never the outer world, for consciousness extends only to our own states and acts. It is always and only our representations of which we are conscious in dealing with the outer world.
