The experiment fails, and all hope seems gone ; for what can comfort the survivor if the dead die forever ? Suddenly Fenwick recalls that man alone asks "do the dead die forever, " that nature gives no instinct in vain, and that the very question prompted by that in- stinct disposes of the doubt.
