St. Gall has always acknowledged its obligations to Ireland, and kept up a lively correspon- dence with this University as representing its learning and intellect. In the library of St. Gall is still preserved one o...f the most curious documents existing in the whole world. This document is the original plan drawn out by Eginhard, Charlemagne's chief architect, for the rebuilding of the great Church of St. Gall. The Abbat Gozpertus, in the year 829, desired to signalize his rule by some great architectural work, and applied to Eginhard, who sent him back this plan, where we see provision made for two round towers at the east end of the apse, ^ while in the cathedral of Aix-la- Chapelle, erected between 796 and 804, under Charle- magne and by the same architect, we find two round towers at the west end of the church.^ We have only to deal with one other point, and then we have completed our proof.
