The door was open, and through this a fire w^as faintly visible at the other end of the house. The stranger entered, and made his way to the fire, by the long passage between the tails of the cows, through muck three or four inches deep. Though he was in bed, long after high noon, there was nothing amiss with him, except the chronic sloth which made bed the place most agree- able on a winter day. While the treaty for a cow pro- ceeded, the beast, at whose heels the bed was, backed a little, and her bowels being free, she sent a volley, which fell on the coarse rug that covered the bed. An ex- clamation burst from the visitor; but the tranquil host quietly shook off as much as the rug was willing to part with, repeating an Irish proverb, which, in English, declares, that " there is luck in muck.
