To a large number of these, the saving of this stipend was sufficient to determine their choice in favour of the free National School. In those intermediate schools there was much useful teaching. The want, which their disappearance from many localities has created, was recently strongly illus- trated. The Benchers of the Honourable Society of King's Inns, a few years ago, instituted a preliminary examination, in school literature, including arithme- tic, geography, and a little Latin, as a test of qualiii- cation to become an attorney's apprentice.
