The war, however, was waged on both sides with the ferocity for which civil wars are notorious, the Catholics on one side driving a helpless population to die under the walls of Londonderry, the Enniskilleners on the other cutting down their defeated enemies without mercy; and a harvest of hate and vengeance was laid up suf- ficient to account for much that would otherwise seem too bad for human nature during some generations to come.
