20-23, on the other hand, threaten Judah with almost complete destruction, and emphasize the numerical insignificance of the Remnant. 20. shall no more.. Lord. An allusion to the policy of Ahaz in making himself tributary to Assyria in order to purchase Assyrian help against Syria and North Israel (see on vii. 1-17). There is no evidence that Hezekiah, who had to reap the bitter fruit of that policy, himself relied in any way on Assyria. But the main point is the contrast between dependence on ...a foreign power, working for its own ends, and reliance on Yahwe ' in ■truth,' i.e. in loyalty to Him. 21. remnant... return : see on vii. 3. mighty God : ' Hero-God,' as in ix. 6, where, however, the reference is not to Yahwe, but to the Messianic king. 22. Israel : vocative, ' O Israel.' consumption is determined : rather 'extermination is decreed.' overflowing with righteousness. The extermination of the great mass of the people will be an exhibition on a grand scale of the judicial righteousness of God.
