Orthodox Islam was horrified and a thousand maulvies pronounced him an infidel and his teaching the beguilement of Satan. As a matter of fact Sir Sayyad Ahmad Khan stands as the great champion of Islam, because he bolstered up the waning faith of a multitude of educated Mohammedans, who could not have long continued loyal to the absurdi- ties of old-fashioned dogma.
