All this evidences the truth of the theory, that the strata had subsided to where the heat or other factors of great depth and pressure, had operated to eliminate the uniformly brackish sea water that saturated the sands when the strata was formed. Sulphur and other substances that blend with coal, petroleum and many other products, could only have done so in a condition of volati- lization.
