The usual route to the Vatican is by the Borgo Nuovo. To the right in this street is the church of Santa Maria Traspontina (PI. I, 9), erected in 1566. Farther on, to the right, in the small Piazza Scossa Cavalli, is the *Palazzo Giraud, the property of Prince Don Giulio Torlonia, erected by Ant. Montecavallo in 1503-6 for Card. Adriano da Corneto. The facade i^ a close reproduction of that of the Can- celleria (p. 218), and Bramantes share in designing this palace is probably limited to the ar...chitecture of the inner court. The poor portal dates from the 18th century. — To the left is the Palazzo dei Penitenzieri, built about 1480 by Card. Dom. Delta Rovere and decorated hy Pinturicchio, h\it now in a neglected condition. A saloon on the groundfloor has an excellent ceiling-painting of mythological scenes. — The W. Side of the piazza is formed by the Palazzo dei CoNVERTENDi, partly built by Bramante for the Caprini family from Viterbo, and purchased in 1517 by Raphael, who resided here until bis death.
