Nearly all the water, as well as all the food for the advancing army had to be brought up from thousands of feet below. The Italian pursuit necessarily slowed down as the Austrians at length reached that hne of forti- fied positions, selected and prepared in advance, where they hoped to maintain themselves with comparatively small numbers. Here they were no doubt in a condition to spare some troops for Galicia. But the manner in which the Austrian 138 ITALY IN THE WAR retirement was clenched and held, and the masterly organisation of the Italian advance, effected their purpose.
