James writes in Pragmatism, pp. 76-77: "If there be any life that it is really better we should lead, and if there should be any idea, which, if believed in, would help us to lead that life, then it would be really better for us to believe in that idea, unless, indeed, belief in it incidentally clashed with other great vital benefits. [Now listen:] 'What would be better for us to believe'! This sounds very like a definition of truth. It comes very near saying 'what we ought to believe': and in ...that defi- nition none of you would find any oddity. Ought we ever not to believe what it is better for tis to believe ? And can we then keep the notion of what is better for us, and what is true for us permanently apart ?" That playing with the logical and the sentimental meaning of ought, I call the superlative of cleverness.^^ Now to Rousseau. It is a passage from the answer to the archbishop of Paris (CEuvres, III, pp. 92-93), who had written his "Mandement" against Emile, speaking espe- cially of the Profession de foi du Vicaire Savoyard.
