In 1754 there was born in Haydon Bridge a person known by the name of Ned Coulson, whose swiftness of foot and eccentricity of character made him quite a local celebrity. He could perform on the violin whilst he ran along the road with the instrument on his back. He could run with the greatest ease before a post-chaise, and has often alarmed travellers by passing them and then hiding himself, repassing, and at length bidding them a good night. He had a method of producing a sound somewhat resem
...bling the report of a pistol, and this he mischievously employed to intimidate travellers. He has often been sitting in the inn at Haydon Bridge when travellers have arrived wet with perspiration, caused by the fright he had given them. He went 50 miles one stormy winter's night with a message, and returned next morning. On being asked by his master his reason for not going, he replied, " I have been, and here is the return message. " He was not only swift, but strong, and cour- ageous. He often walked on the parapet of the bridge in the village with a sack of corn upon his back.
