He says with much bitterness : " There is many a righteous man who perishes in spite of his righteousness, and many a wicked man who lives long in spite of his wickedness. " * And again : " There is a vanity (a disappointment or disillusion- ment) which happens on the earth, viz. , that there are righteous men who fare according to the work of the wicked, and that there are wicked men who fare accord- ing to the work of the righteous. Recourse was therefore had by pious editors to the expedient of interpolation. A considerable degree of success was obtained. In the Epilogue the author was described as a simply devout man, and in the body of the work he was made to confess that the wicked were really punished here, and would be punished here- ♦Eccles.
