To the same period belongs the wonderful JOHANNES BRAHMS. 97 collection of Songs published by Sim- rock (op. 46-49), and consisting of four books ; among these the Botschaft, after Hafiz ("Wehe Liiftcken"), and the Magyar song, " Sah dem edlen Bildnis" 'are remarkable for artistic handling. A few songs of a more popular character, or treated in a simple, ballad-like form, are more taking to the ear, such as the dainty little Wiegenlied, with its indepen- dent, delicate accompaniment, which has ...become very popular. The simplicity with which Brahms treats Goethe's poems (there are two in this collection) seems a further proof of his artistic tact.
Goethe's lyric art is so perfect, so self- contained, that its effect can hardly be enhanced by music; Brahms therefore leaves it to produce its own effect in its original form, and only drapes it with music as with a suitable garment.
