There is a reverent fear which is consistent with perfect love ; but there is a being afraid of God that arises from a sense of guilt, or from a doubt of his love toward us. It is this latter fear that can not live with love. John assures us that perfect love casteth out fear, and he declares that 143 1 14 JOHN AND HIS FRIENDS. in so doing it casts ont torment, for this sort of fear is a disquieting, torturing passion. Nothing can be more terrible, a more deadly' foe to peace and happiness, than a suspicion or dread that God has forgotten us, or is indifferent to us, or that he is angry with us.
