Yth, we descried Mon mouth Island ahead, appearing high and steep to the northward and eastward, while to the south- ward it is more level. In front, somewhat elevated, was a kind of fort, with one gun, to which led a pretty good flight of stone steps. A veteran with a ragged uniform, walked on the wall of the fort, while a few more near him were also staring at us.
