When the wind was on the quarter which was the best of any, and the ship running from ten to twelve miles an hour, I often sat upon the cat-head on the weather-bow noticing how the snow-like water spread itself out before the bows of our gallant ship; and while gazing on the great expanse of ocean which surrounded us, and with strange emotions, aware of the fact that we were bounding on to a foreign land, .
