What reading level is Journal of Maurice De Guérin book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

I have read with the most intense delight Lucrbce Borgia. It is needless to say that all that comes from Hugo is remarkable, and Journal. 83 bears the stamp of power. There is something in the temper of his genius so surprising, so brilliant, so bewildering, that after reading one of his works, whether it be drama, ode, or romance, we are filled with wonder, our souls are deeply moved, and our minds greatly ex- cited. All these compositions stir some of the inmost fibres of humanity or probe so
...me hidden depth. Lucr&ce Borgia is far in advance of the others. Hugo was right when he said, in the Preface, that this drama would mark the most important date in his literary career. In fact, to me it seems as though his genius became incarnated in this work. In it I find at the highest point of realization the two genii which possess his soul, — the one, fiery, irrepressible, extreme in its impetuosity, taking pleasure in all that is strange and horrible, rushing into per- ilous and fantastic adventures where bloodshed and encounters make one's hair stand on end, fatalistic because its deviations carry it too high in the ideal of humanity without bringing it near enough to God ; the other calm, gentle, full of a tenderness that is almost plaintive, laying hold upon what is purest and highest in man and most fruitful in virtue and goodness.
