Fred also went on to attend Louisburg College, Barton College in Wilson, and Duke Divinity School. While at the Divinity School he served student pastorates in Saulston and Whitley Memorial in Smithfield. Together Fred and Anita served the following appointments in the NC Conference: Mt. Carmei-Saulston, 1964; Smithfield: Whitley, 1968; Henderson: City Road, 1971; Raleigh: Cokesbury, 1972; Belhaven: Trinity, 1973; Tyrrell, 1976; Institute, 1980; institute-Hickory Grove, 1982; and Bell Arthur, 1...983. Fred was admitted as a probationary member in 1971, and became an Associate Member in 1978. Over 22 years serving in active ministry passed before Fred was forced to take disability leave in 1984 due to the severe effects of rheumatoid arthritis. His health deteriorating, Fred retired in 1992 to Goldsboro where they lived until his death on April 12, 1997. Funeral services were held at the Saulston UMC with Dr. Dennis Draper officiating. Burial was in the Pikeville Cemetery. Fred Dillon is survived by his wife, Anita Thompson Dillon of Goldsboro; a daughter, Deborah Dee Dillon Oliver of Smithfield; two grandchildren, Catherine Oliver Brown and Jennifer Oliver; one great-grandchild, Bradley Brown; and since Fred's passing, a second great-grandchild, Sara Ann Brown.
