To carry on this exacting litigation he created a special law department, of which he was the active head; and as an illus- tration of the volume of the work, it should be added that for a long period the calendar of our Supreme Court of original jurisdiction was congested with these cases, and more than two thousand of them were tried at Special and Trial Terms, and nearly one thousand Appeals were argued.
