To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
He has recovered speech; the other guests have gone, including GeorgeBelvoir. Leopold Travers has taken a great fancy to Kenelm. Leopoldwas one of those men, not uncommon perhaps in England, who, with greatmental energies, have little book-knowledge, and when they come incontact with a book-reader who is not a pedant feel a pleasantexcitement in his society, a source of interest in comparing noteswith him, a constant surprise in finding by what venerable authoritiesthe deductions which their ow...n mother-wit has drawn from life aresupported, or by what cogent arguments derived from books thosedeductions are contravened or upset. Leopold Travers had in him thatsense of humour which generally accompanies a strong practicalunderstanding (no man, for instance, has more practical understandingthan a Scot, and no man has a keener susceptibility to humour), andnot only enjoyed Kenelm's odd way of expressing himself, but veryoften mistook Kenelm's irony for opinion spoken in earnest. Since his early removal from the capital and his devotion toagricultural pursuits, it was so seldom that Leopold Travers met a manby whose conversation his mind was diverted to other subjects thanthose which were incidental to the commonplace routine of his lifethat he found in Kenelm's views of men and things a source of novelamusement, and a stirring appeal to such metaphysical creeds of hisown as had been formed unconsciously, and had long reposed unexaminedin the recesses of an intellect shrewd and strong, but more accustomedto dictate than to argue.
