All ships bound for foreign ports must call at Gravesend to take a pilot on board. There are 359 Trinity pilots, of whom many live at this port. Inward-bound ships are boarded by Custom House officers ; and emigrant ships anchor here and undergo inspection. Chatham is one of the " Three Towns, " as Strood, Rochester, and Chatham are called. It is naturally of great importance as one of our dockyards, and because of its position on the Medway. Sheerness is also a Royal Dockyard, and commands the... entrance of the Medway and the Thames. Ramsgate is really the harbour of refuge for the Downs. Its harbour of more than 50 acres is enclosed by two broad stone piers ; and there are occasions when it presents a very animated appearance. Here may be seen private yachts and commercial shipping, and as many as 400 vessels have been accommodated in this harbour. 80 KENT Deal is a little port of some interest from its position with regard to the Downs and the Goodwin Sands. It is one of Lloyd's stations, and has a time-ball tower, by which ships in the Downs may correct their chronometers.
