The policy which Alfred determined to adopt was, not to attempt theutter extirpation of the Danes from England, but only to expel the_armed forces_ from his own dominions, allowing those peaceablydisposed to remain in quiet possession of such lands in other parts ofthe island as they already occupied. Instead, therefore, of treatingGuthrum with harshness and severity as a captive enemy, he told himthat he was willing not only to give him his liberty, but to regardhim, on certain conditions, as ...a friend and an ally, and allow himto reign as a king over that part of England which his countrymenpossessed, and which was beyond Alfred's own frontiers. Theseconditions were, that Guthrum was to go away with all his forces andfollowers out of Alfred's kingdom, under solemn oaths never to return;that he was to confine himself thenceforth to the southeastern partof England, a territory from which the Saxon government had longdisappeared; that he was to give hostages for the faithful fulfillmentof these stipulations, without, however, receiving on his partany hostages from Alfred.
