Of the comparative import- ance of substance and form Dante speaks in the Convivio^ II, xii, 21-7: 'La bontà e la bellezza di ciascuno sermone sono intra loro partite e diverse; che la bontà è nella sentenza, e la bellezza nell' ornamento delle parole: 1' una e V altra è con diletto; av- vegnaché la bontade sia massimamente dilettosa.' The last of the above mentioned predecessors of the new style, Bonagiunta Orbicciani, is presented to Dante by Forese.
