To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

By using 100 grams of iodine, 5 grams of phosphorus and 25 c. C of water, 95 grams of hydrogen iodide (of which 37. 5 grams were obtained by distillation) are obtained, instead of 100. 8 grams. With 20 grams of water 98. 1 grams are obtained (74. 4 grams as gas and 23. 7 grams by distillation). * IODINE PENTOXIDE. I 2 5 .
30 grams iodine are placed in a retort and 158 c. C. Of water and nitric acid free from nitrogen oxides (page 18) poured over it. On shaking a reaction takes place which is ha
...stened by moderate heating. The red vapors are driven out by a strong current of air, which is blown into the tubulature of the retort through a glass tube. In spite of this a part of the iodine is invariably reduced by these nitrogen oxides ; it volatillizes and is condensed with the distilling acid in a receiver, which is kept cool. At inter- vals the heating is stopped and the distillate, after having air blown into it, is put back. The white residue is dis- solved in a little water and evaporated to dryness in a porcelain dish, iodic acid anhydride remaining in white crystals.
