What then is the explanation of their decided preponderance in these lower grades? There is only one possible answer. Since the two sexes must enter school in substantially equal numbers but boys are decidedly more numerous in the lower grades, it means that there is considerably more retardation among boys than among girls. On the other hand girls are more numerous in the upper grades. This means that there is more elimination among boys.
