The ladies too were bright spots of colour against the pale green lawn in their unseasonably thin frocks, worn in honour of this special day - except for Millicent Gowdry, whose brown suit was so dul...l people walked past without even noticing her. Which sadly echoed the fact that with so many of their friends not returning from the front, the chances of matrimony for these girls had shrunk to almost nil.
