When he recognizes his frantic curiosity about them as a new kind of attack on his psycho'- logical defenses, he cries out for help and obtains a sense of respite. One ray of light for Mark, during his incarceration, has been his duty... of standing guard over a fellow-prisoner, a tramp whom Belbury officials have mistaken for the resurrected Merlin. Lewis extracts considerable humor from this mistaken identity. Caught in a situation he does not comprehend, the tramp takes refuge in silence, further mystifying Belbury leaders. Mark and this man develop a solidarity which constitutes a kind of em- bryonic St. Anne's within Belbury.
