Hunters often entered Khartoum, bringing the tusks of elephants they had killed in the 172 LEADERS TO LIBERTY African wilderness. You can easily guess, however, what was of most interest to the man from Fife: it was that here in the Sudan he was t...o take part in actual fighting. He was to do his part as a British soldier in teaching the wild chiefs of the Sudan what law means. He was to help in putting an end to the wicked slavery of men, women, and children.
Douglas Haig was not disappointed. He took part in many a fierce fight under the great General Kitchener who commanded the expedition. He showed himself with- out fear. General Kitchener began to take notice of him and made him his friend. This quiet man of strong will, the general had discovered, was no common soldier.
