To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
The Chief came up at ten, and, after reconnoitring for some time, would stand it no longer, and ordered the batteries to open on the enemy. They commenced an up- roar such as I never heard before ; the twenty- fours went off with a roar that shook the very earth ; and the shot rushed through the air with a noise like a mighty winged spirit, till the very atmosphere was stunned. I was look- ing through a telescope all the time, and saw JOURNAL OF A SUBALTERN. 77 where each shot took effect. The ...enemy were all in their trenches in five minutes, the tents struck, and not a man to be seen ; some of the shells were beautifully pitched, and burst right above them — they must have done great execution. Presently they opened on us with their batteries, and kept up a sharp cannon- ading all day : however, we were so well pro- tected that only one man was knocked over, losing his leg just below the knee ; an ammu- nition-waggon was blown up by one of the shells, and exploded with an awful row, but, wonderful to say, not a soul was hurt.
