Lastly, the expansion may be dispensed with altogether, during the operations at the arrival or departure of the cages, by the use of two other little slide-valves, placed by the side of the expansion-slides, but which are independent of them, and capable of being opened or closed at pleasure.
This last movement may either be effected by the engine-man himself, or may be accomplished automatically by means of two tappets suitably placed upon a wheel, which is driven by an endless screw, and which accomplishes a little less than one revolution in each complete run.
