What reading level is Lectures On Poetry book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
This is the period which includes the great central group of the comedies, Much Ado, As You Like It, and Twelfth Night ; following almost immediately on them, the full maturing of Shakespeare's dramatic power in Julius Caesar; the strange inverted romance of Troilus and Cressida ; and the slow gestation of Samlet. At its end we are opening on the culminating period of the great tragedies, from Othello and the second quarto of Hamlet in 1604 to Coriolanus in 1609. But here we are at once faced b...y a formidable body of criticism which assigns the bulk of the Sonnets to a much earlier date, one contemporary with or imme- diately following that of the poems in which Shake- speare had first appeared before the public in his own name, the Venus and Adonis of 1593 and the Lucrece of 1594. Both of these poems were dedicated to the 188 SHAKESPEARE'S SONNETS Earl of Southampton ; and on this slender basis has been piled a mountain of misinterpretation. Further evidence, if it can be called evidence, rests chiefly on three possible identifications.
