To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
I think we have a city solicitor that the majority of the people of Boston believe tries to do his duty irrespective of the votes of this council. If he does not, let us in- duce our successors to remove him and put a more just and high-minded man in the position. Now it is treating a man discourteously to start off- hand, as it were, upon the authority of a mere newspaper paragraph and inquire into the legality of his election. I don't know that anything fur- ther can be said upon this questio...n, except to say that the deliberative way is a thoroughly fair manner to treat it ; and I think that every reason- able man will agree with me that we shall act coolly and calmly if we con- sent to the assignment as moved by the gentleman from Ward 13. "Mr. Sweetser: I think this matter of so much importance that it should be settled by competent authority ; and it was for that reason I offered the amendment I did, to refer it to the city solicitor. I voted against the amendment to the amendment, because I thought it very dis- respectful to the city solicitor.
