The next morning we were awoke by a noise outside our windows, and found out 13 a force of cavalry, infantry, and artillery were on the point of moving from the Kesidency. I posted myself at the window — for re- maining in bed was out of the question — and watched the poor men coming in ; a melancholy spectacle, indeed ; no order ; one after the other ; some riding ; some wounded, supported by their comrades ; some on guns ; some fell down and died from exhaustion, not half a mile from our position.
