Dr. Middleton observes in his Preface to his Enquiry, &c, p. 31, asfollows: "I have shown by many indisputable facts, that the ancientFathers were extremely credulous and superstitious, possessed withstrong prejudices, and an enthusiastic zeal in favor not only ofChristianity in general, but of every particular doctrine, which a wildimagination could engraft upon it, and scrupling no art or means bywhich they might propagate the same principles. In short they were of acharacter front which nothing could be expected that was candid andimpartial; nothing but what a weak or crafty understanding could supplytowards confirming those prejudices with which they happened to bepossessed, especially where religion was the subject, which above allother motives strengthens every bias, and inflames every passion of thehuman mind.
