But from the first Allsop declared that he was willing to face a trial, if he were secured against heavy expense. Holyoake and another friend (B. Langley), therefore, audaciously offered to give up Allsop, if the Government would promise them the ^200 for use in his defence. On June 16th Mr. Secretary Walpole wrote them that " the Two hundred pounds offered by the Government in the case referred to in your letter has not been withdrawn." They set themselves vigorously to fan the popular feeling... that the British Government was " truckling to a foreigner," a tyrant, etc., and on July 12th they received another letter : " Gentlemen, " I am directed by Mr. Secretary Walpole to inform you that since the date of my answer to your application of the 9th ult the Law Officers of the Crown have been consulted, and have expressed an opinion that it is not advisable to take any further steps in the prosecution against Mr. Allsop. The Government have consequently determined to put an end to the proceedings against that gentleman, and to withdraw the offer of a reward for his apprehension." Allsop returned, on September 17th, grateful and un- repentant.
