Have not been heard from, but the men who made the ascent had Belshaw's aneroid with them, which stood 1000 feet higher on the real, than on the bogus summit. Belshaw's previous trigonometrical measurements gave 900 feet difference. If King's barometric result on the peaks he ascended be taken as correct, and 900 feet added, we have 14, 612 + 900 = 286 JOSIAH DWIGHT WHITNEY 15, 512! Anyway Mt. Whitney is pretty safe to be over 15, 000.
