What might have hap- pened had this conflict been fought out on the line originally designed by General Meade, it is, of course, impracticable to say ; but that it was fought, and resulted in a complete victory, on the plan conceived by General Hancock, and mainly under his personal direction, displays the highest order of generalship in that officer.
