" It then became a free land, — the freest land on earth, — where every man had these same rights ; the same privileges were to be exercised by one as by another, and that same protection that was extended by the Government over one man, was also extended equally over every other man. We then amended the Constitution further, by adopt- ing the Fifteenth Amendment. That Fifteenth Amendment prohibited the wronging of any man who was a citizen of the United States, by denying or abridging his right to vote, on account of his color. When this was accomplished, the Republican Party was in power.
