After this, the minister spoke a few words of Scripture to comfort the con- science, and then the congregation began to sing the first five commandments. After the public confession of sins, he considered it desirable to pronounce a solemn promise of forgiveness of sin, in order to comfort the depressed in heart. And that he did not do so arose simply from the desire not to hurt the weak.
