Hence the Signory wished both the Eight and the Ten to be changed before the expiration of their legal term of office, in order to ensure the election of men of their own party. This would be the only means of secur- ing full liberty of action. We have no detailed report of the debate. Nothing but the briefest outline of the proceed- ings and the gist of the speeches made on the occasion have been preserved.
