They didn't know how to say a proper thank- you or they didn't know the rules of common courtesy. Those are some of the ones who were, because they were white, fortunate enough to buy homes - the homes that they didn't want black people to live in. Anyway, when I walked in there the third monring, I was about ten minutes late because of traffic, and the supervisor says to me, "Well, if you can't get here on... time " and I said, "I'm only a few minutes late. " "Nevertheless, " she said, "if you can't get her on time, we'll just have to let you go. " I said, "You can let me go right now. " I've always had the attitude, even today, and I guess that's why I'll never be rich, that since I wasn't trained for anything in particular, and I can learn anything that anyone else could, I didn't have to stay on a job I didn't like - and I didn't have to take anything I didn't like. I could always get another job, and fortunately that's the way it's always been.
