"But the law applies to no case of contract. Where the parties to the agreement are capable of making a contract, the remedy for a breach of it is by action at law. In the case of slaves and of ap- prentices, there is no remedy against the individual who absconds by an action.
" Various objections are stated to the fugitive slave law of 1850. The duties of the commissioners, the penalties inflicted, the bribe secured to the commis- sioner, for remanding the fugitive, are all objected to as oppressive and unconstitutional.
