On another occasion, alluding to those same words, he remarks : ^^ I have no more doubt of ^ the communion of the Holy Ghost' than I have of * the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,' or of * the love of the Father ;' but I do not enjoy it as I ou...ght, as I might, and as I pray daily that I may." It is because he is gradually realizing more intense- ly the Spirit's in-dwelling that his outward walk, and even person, are contracting a more heavenly hue. Like that '^ hope" of which the poet so beau- tifully fflngs, he almost literally, " tnth nplifted foot, set free from earth, Pants for the place of his ethereal birth, And crowns the soul, whUeryet a mourner here.
With wreaths like those triumphant spirits wear." .
A friend who was with him one morning in a large circle, when Montgomery was invited to lead the devotions, felt ^Uhe fervor, the simplicity, and the sweetness" of his breathings, as if already foretastes of heaven.
