The poet Gray, in his famous ode On a ...Distant Prospect of Eton College gives voice to the commonly expressed opinion that child- hood is the happiest time of life, the unfortun- ate thing about it being that the children do not happen to know that they are happy, which 92 Life's Dark Problems makes it all the sadder. Looking at the child- ren on the playground, he says : " Alas! Regardless of their doom, The little victims play; No sense they have of ills to come, Nor care beyond to-day.
" Yet, ah! why should they know their fate, Since sorrow never comes too late, And happiness too swiftly flies ?
