To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
D. Carlos of Spain was there in 1832. His protest against the recognition of his niece, D. Isabel II, as Queen of Spain, was dated and signed from here. Portuguese writers agree, however, that no record of the history of Ramalhao exceeds in artistic, literary and historic interest the memories of Beckford, who, they say, was also a prince in good taste, in wealth, and in the grace with which he dispensed a generous hospitahty. A vaulted passage opens out to the left of the entrance, from which ...mounted a wide stone staircase with shallow steps, to the long series of spacious rooms opening one into the other, which were the Oriental salons of Beckford, decorated with the divans, soft curtains, drapery and mirrors that he associated with Eastern life. As there is no possibility of catching a glimpse of these, we pass under the archway and step out upon a long, broad terrace, where a long line of noble columns support a verandah which runs along the windows of the upper rooms. The gardens slope down from the terrace, which is again bordered with the box shrubbery; palms were growing luxuriantly, and a vast variety of flowering plants and shrubs.
