A sporting journal, published weekly, and intended to compete with BelVs Life in Sydney. Mr. Wilkes was a contributor, but not on sporting topics. It lasted a year or so. 1858. — SYDiirET Dispatch: a Weekly Journal of Folitics, Com- merce, and Literature. 12 pages. No. 1, Saturday 3 July. This was " the first Australian journal printed entirely with colonial-made type." The type was cast in Sydney ; and certainly, no paper could be better printed than the Dispatch. Mr. Wilkes was among its cont...ributors for a short period. 1858. — The Chuhch Sentinel. No. 1, November. A religious publication, stated to have been " started by a few Members of the Anglican Laity, to resist a threatened Epis- copal despotism." It also contended for the abolition of State Aid to Eeligion — a policy which has been recently carried into effect. The Sentinel (which did not live long) was edited by Mr. Greoffrey Eagar, the present Colonial Treasurer. Mr. William I'orster also wrote for it. 1858. — The Spectatoe.
