May, 1644, he left the siege of Latham, and retired to the town of Bolton with his men. There he was in his turn attacked by Prince Rupert and the Earl of Derby on the following day ; and after only a quarter of an hour's fierce fighting, the brave earl at the head of two hundred of his tenants and servants, who had followed their lord to the field, forced the gates, and the earl was the first man who entered the town. Rigby contrived to make his escape, but two thousand of his men were killed ; and Prince Rupert sent the standards of the rebels, which were taken at Bolton, to Lady Derby, as a token of respect, and acknowledg- ment that the victory was gained by the courage of her husband.
